Fair Trade Coffee Facts
- Fair trade was started in Holland in 1987.
- Fair Trade labels now license commercial sales of 24 million
pounds of coffee beans per a year, selling in over 35,000
retail outlets and over 130 brand names.
- Canadian and American companies now use the Fair Trade
logo on their product's packaging as to assure consumers they
have purchased coffee under fair trade conditions. The companies
pay a license fee to a licensing organization and agree to
independent monitoring.
The
TRANSFAIR CANADA Fair Trade Certified Logo guarantees consumers
that their coffee, tea, cocoa and sugar originates from FLO
monitored producers in Latin America, Africa and Asia
Fair Trade criteria includes:
- pay a set minimum price that covers the costs of production
- advance payments or extend credit to producers to help
avoid debt while financing the next year's production
- agree to longer term trading relationships that provide
producers with added security to plan for the future and promote
sustainable production practices
